Description
The Altering the Atmosphere on Mars Unit Guide video is a dynamic presentation that provides an overview of an instructional unit in chemistry: Altering the Atmosphere on Mars. The video also shares the educational theories used to justify the decisions made when designing this unit.
Relevance
This artifact reflects ISTE standard 4: learning designer (4a) and standard 5: professional learning facilitator (5b). The unit guide provides authentic, active learning experiences (4a) by having students participate in a real world phenomena. This presentation also helps educators facilitate active learning (5b) by modeling the use of educational theories to drive curriculum design.
Analysis
This video was made to model how to use educational theories to make decisions when planning an instructional unit. I had done a different version of this unit in years past, but modified it to take into account the different learning theories. After making this video, I had the opportunity to use the modified version of this unit in my high school chemistry class. The students responded well to the modifications, and were more engaged in the learning process than they had been in previous years.
