Description
The Khan Academy: A Multimedia Review video is a dynamic presentation that reviews a chemistry unit created by Khan Academy. The video analyzes Khan Academy through the lens of Mayer’s design principles (Mayer, 2009). The video also looks at how Khan Academy relates to cognitive load theory (Sweller et al., 1998).
Relevance
This artifact reflects ISTE standard 4: learning designer (4d). The video models the use of instructional design principles. This is done by explicitly sharing what design principles Khan Academy uses in their chemistry unit (i.e., segmenting, multimedia and signaling principle). The video also shows an example of an effective digital learning environment (4d). This is done by analyzing how the learning environment meets the motivational needs of diverse learners. This is also achieved by exploring how Khan Academy minimizes the extraneous load and optimizes the germane load.
Analysis
This video critically analyzes the use of Khan Academy in the chemistry classroom. When creating this video, I had to consider learning and design theories. The act of using these theories to analyze Khan Academy has provided me with the skills needed to analyze other web tools that I use in my classroom.
