Description
The Progress Monitoring Resource document is a tool for students to monitor their progress through a unit of instruction in a high school chemistry class. The unit is broken down into learning targets, and the students fill out the chart to track their progress. The chart also allows students to reflect on how they can improve, and set goals for the next learning task.
Relevance
This artifact reflects ISTE standard 6: data-driven decision-maker (6c). This document allows students to use learning data to set their own goals and measure their progress (6c). First, students check off if they have completed the learning task, and reflect on if it was difficult for them to complete. After the teacher grades and returns the assignment, students can summarize the feedback on the chart. Students then reflect on the feedback by answering the two questions: “How can I improve my understanding of the learning target” and “What evidence do I have to show that I can successfully complete the learning task”. The chart also includes a space for students to set goals for the next learning target.
Analysis
This document is an effective way to get students involved in the learning process. It holds them accountable for their learning, and allows them to reflect on their progression through each unit. The self-tracker also allows students to see what assignments are coming up next, so they can be prepared. Having students summarize the feedback from the teachers lets them recognize patterns in their work, and shows them what they need to focus on for the next learning task.
