Description

The Reflection and Revision of a Powerful Learning Experience document shares a powerful learning experience where I had my students explore ocean acidification, and its effects on marine life. I collaborated with a peer in the instructional technology program to reflect on how I could have made the learning experience more powerful. The document shares the revisions to the activity that makes the learning experience more relevant to student’s lives. The revisions also include how to make the learning experience use technology in a more effective way. Along with the written document, there is also a supporting video that my partner and I created to summarize the reflection process.

Relevance

This artifact reflects ISTE standard 3: collaborator (3b) and standard 7: Digital Citizen Advocate (7a). I partnered with an educator to identify digital learning content that is culturally relevant (3b) to students by working with a partner to find online resources where students can interact with data about our local watershed. I also revised the learning experience to use technology for civic engagement (7a) by having students create a website to share what ocean acidification is, how humans are contributing to it, and how it is affecting marine life. Students also create a plan to try and stop the effects of ocean acidification, and share their plan on their website.

Analysis

After working with my partner to revise this learning experience, I had the opportunity to implement it into my classroom. In the original activity, students just made a poster all about ocean acidification. After implementing the revised activity, I saw an increase in engagement and student comprehension. Also, having students learn how to create a website is a skill that they will be able to use beyond my chemistry classroom.
