Description

The Supporting ELLs Professional Development project compiles multiple peer reviewed resources to answer the question How can secondary science and math teachers support English Language Learners’ (ELL) content and language acquisition? The artifact also provides a professional development plan and resources to support the use of linguistic, conceptual, and social-cultural scaffolding in the classroom.

Relevance

This artifact reflects ISTE standard 3: collaborator (3a) and standard 5: Professional Learning Facilitator (5a). I collaborated with a peer in the instructional technology program at Towson University to research new instructional strategies (3a). The research paper also provides a plan with supplemental resources to provide professional learning to support cultural, social-emotional and learning needs (5a).

Analysis

This artifact was created because the population of ELL students has been increasing over the past few years, and a lot of teachers I had talked to expressed how they felt as if they had not received enough training on how to support their needs. Not only were my partner and I able to find specific strategies that teachers could add to their tool box, but we were able to develop a professional development plan to help support educators. I have not used the professional development plan, but I did summarize my findings to share with my department to help us include scaffolding strategies into our future lessons.
